A documentary by Søren Høy
“We Are Greenland — Football is Freedom” tells the story of five Greenlandic football players who, on behalf of their team and nation, are dreaming of being accepted into the global football community. These young men are ambitious, courageous, and disciplined athletes. Their ultimate dream is to compete in World Cup qualifying matches under their own flag. To achieve this, they must overcome the challenges of a political system where football bureaucracy clashes with a small nation’s aspirations for independence.
The Greenlandic Football Association has hired an ambitious coach determined to support both current and future players. Together, they embark on a journey to prove to the football world that they are ready to compete at the highest possible level.
Greenland is not a UN-recognized nation and football authorities have ruled that only independent, recognized nations may participate in official matches. The team prepares for the Island Games—often referred to as the Olympics for islands—the only tournament where Greenland is allowed to compete. However, their preparations are hampered by harsh conditions: the football pitches in Greenland are covered by ice and snow for most of the year, allowing them only six weeks of training before the tournament. Meanwhile, their opponents can train year-round. Despite the odds, they aim to win the Island Games.
Throughout the tournament, the players and coach face numerous obstacles, including injuries, on-pitch drama and personal struggles. They win their first two games, and in a dramatic quarterfinal against Bermuda, they stage a miraculous comeback. Yet, in the final minute, Bermuda scores the decisive goal, shattering their hopes and all looks lost.
While the team battles on the pitch, the Greenlandic Football Association works behind the scenes in political corridors. They aspire to join the North American Football Association, Concacaf, which may offer them a chance at international recognition. An insider tips them off about a looming rule change that could make their application impossible. Racing against time, they submit their application just days before the secret deadline. The move becomes a global news story, reigniting Greenland’s ambitions and putting their dream back in motion.
The film follows the lives of the five players and their coach. All are amateurs, playing football for national pride and personal ambition. The team has no sponsors, and the staff pay their own tickets. They represent the antithesis of the commercial football world, where financial interests dominate. Their stories are about finding identity and freedom through football.
This is an un-filtered, thought-provoking and action-packed story of nature against glass towers, idealism against commercialism, and ultimately—Greenland against the football world.
